The highly anticipated Hyundai IONIQ 6 is gearing up for a major upgrade that could position it as a strong contender against the Tesla Model 3. The new electric fastback boasts a sleek new design both inside and out, along with a range of innovative features that are sure to impress consumers.
It has been three years since Hyundai first unveiled the IONIQ 6 at the 2022 Busan International Motor Show. Marketed as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3, the electric sedan promised over 350 miles of driving range, fast charging in under 20 minutes, and an affordable price point. However, sales of the IONIQ 6 in the US fell short last year, with only 12,264 units sold compared to Tesla’s 189,903 Model 3s.
With the upgraded version of the IONIQ set to launch later this year, Hyundai is aiming to finally match the Model 3 in terms of long-range capabilities, fast charging, and affordability. The new IONIQ 6 has recently been certified by the Ministry of Environment in Korea with an impressive range of up to 568 km (353 miles), surpassing the Kia EV4 at 549 km (341 miles). On the WLTP scale, this could translate to nearly 700 km (430 miles) of range, a significant improvement over the current model’s 614 km (382 miles) rating.
In the US, the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 6 is expected to offer an EPA-estimated range of up to 342 miles, with the new model likely to exceed 350 miles of range. The upgraded 84 kWh battery, similar to the one found in the 2025 IONIQ 5, will contribute to the increased driving range. Additionally, the new IONIQ 6 is expected to come equipped with a built-in NACS port, providing access to Tesla Superchargers for added convenience.
Hyundai unveiled the redesigned IONIQ 6 at the Seoul Mobility Show in April, emphasizing a more streamlined and progressive design. The company also teased a sporty “N” line model, hinting at a high-performance variant in the works. Pricing and final specifications for the new IONIQ 6 are yet to be announced, but consumers can expect more details closer to the launch date later this year.
