BYD Collaborates with Teld and Star Charge to Build 1-MW Ultra-Fast Chargers
BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has recently joined forces with two prominent charger operators in China, Teld and Star Charge, to expedite the deployment of high-power charging infrastructure capable of delivering up to 1,000 kW, or 1 MW (megawatt).
The partnership was officially announced on June 16, with BYD aiming to work closely with Teld and Star Charge to promote the adoption of MW-level fast charging infrastructure across China. Teld, established in 2014, boasts a research and development team of over 1,100 individuals and currently stands as the country’s largest public EV charger operator.
As of the end of May, Teld had an impressive network of 777,782 public chargers spread across 360 cities in China, according to data from the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance (EVCIPA). On the other hand, Star Charge, also founded in 2014, had 685,694 public chargers in China by the end of May, positioning it as the second-largest operator following Teld.
BYD has not disclosed the specific number of collaborative charging stations to be constructed or the timeline for their development. However, the company had previously unveiled its ultra-fast charger supporting up to 1 MW charging power on March 17, claiming that these chargers could add 2 kilometers of range to an EV in just 1 second or 400 kilometers in 5 minutes.
In a bid to further bolster its charging infrastructure, BYD had announced on May 31 at the Shenzhen auto show that it had formed partnerships with Xiaoju Charging and LongShine to jointly construct 1-MW ultra-fast chargers. The collaboration with Xiaoju would see the establishment of 10,000 1-MW chargers, while the partnership with LongShine aimed to set up 5,000 chargers.
The launch of the Han L EV and Tang L EV on April 9 marked a significant milestone for BYD, as these models were the first to support 1-MW peak charging power. The Tang family SUVs recorded sales of 19,012 units in May, while the Han family sedans saw 21,672 units sold during the same month, as per data from CnEVPost.
The collaboration between BYD, Teld, and Star Charge underscores a concerted effort to enhance the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in China, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient transportation ecosystem. With the deployment of 1-MW ultra-fast chargers on the horizon, the future of electric mobility in the country looks promising.
