Dacia’s secrets to success: how it makes its cars so cheap

Unveiling the Dacia Bigster: A Strategic Approach to Design and Pricing

When adapting the Dacia Bigster for Duster duties, there were a few key adjustments that needed to be made. The reinforced sills and increased ride height added a bit to the cost, but the most significant change was extending the A-pillars by 50mm.

One of the main considerations in the design process was managing weight. While some may have expected a seven-seat interior option, Dacia discovered that only 25% of buyers in the segment actually desired this feature. Adding seats would not only increase weight but also require costly reinforcements for the rear axle, impacting the overall pricing strategy. As a result, the Bigster is exclusively offered as a five-seater, catering to the specific preferences of its target audience.

Understanding the needs and desires of the intended buyer was crucial in the development of the Bigster. Dacia took a page out of the German automotive market’s playbook, recognizing the importance of meeting specific demands to appeal to discerning customers. Features like dual-zone air conditioning, two-tone paint options, and an electric tailgate were incorporated based on meticulous market research, ensuring that the Bigster meets the expectations of its target demographic.

Supplier negotiations played a vital role in shaping the final pricing strategy for the Bigster. Dacia’s approach of clearly defining the target price range and collaborating closely with suppliers to achieve cost efficiency sets them apart from other manufacturers. By establishing transparent pricing parameters and actively engaging with suppliers, Dacia avoids unpleasant surprises and ensures that the final product aligns with both quality and affordability standards.

Overall, the Dacia Bigster exemplifies a strategic approach to design and pricing, where careful consideration of market demands, weight management, and supplier negotiations converge to create a compelling offering in the competitive C-SUV segment. With a focus on meeting the specific needs of its target audience and maintaining cost-effective production processes, Dacia has positioned the Bigster as a formidable contender in the automotive market.
