Volkswagen plotting ID 2 R with 400bhp and in-wheel motors

Volkswagen is currently in the works of creating a high-performance version of the ID 2, known as the ID 2 R. This model is set to be the first of its kind to utilize in-wheel motors as part of a new four-wheel drive system. The ID 2 R is expected to be a hot hatchback that will showcase the potency and torque-vectoring potential of hub motors, representing a significant engineering initiative led by Volkswagen’s R performance brand.

If the ID 2 R project gets the green light, it will be positioned above the previously announced ID 2 GTI model and could potentially compete with the powerful Renault 5 Turbo 3E. The proposed drivetrain for the ID 2 R includes a front-mounted electric motor and power electronics similar to the GTI version, in addition to two independently controlled electric hub motors located within the rear wheels. This setup promises a substantial increase in performance and introduces four-wheel drive capabilities without sacrificing valuable boot space.

Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID 2 model is scheduled to debut in 2026, followed by the related ID 2 crossover in 2027. Sources within the company have indicated that the development of the ID 2 R is being carried out in collaboration with a technical partner based in the Balkans, specializing in lightweight, high-output in-wheel motor systems. This partnership aims to deliver exceptional hyper-hatch performance and agility through predictive torque distribution, brake-based yaw control, and dynamic drive modes.

The ID 2 R is expected to offer around 400bhp or more from its trio of electric motors, surpassing the GTI model’s 286bhp output. Despite the advanced technology integrated into the ID 2 R, Volkswagen has revealed that it may not require extensive modifications to the MEB Plus platform to accommodate the additional motor, providing a more cost-effective alternative if needed.

In conclusion, the Volkswagen ID 2 R represents a significant leap forward in electric vehicle performance and technology. With its innovative use of in-wheel motors and four-wheel drive capabilities, this high-performance hatchback is poised to deliver exhilarating driving dynamics while maintaining practicality and efficiency. Keep an eye out for the official debut of the ID 2 R and its crossover counterpart in the coming years.
