New keyless car theft law ‘won’t stop the criminals’

Addressing the Challenges of Car Theft

When it comes to combating electronic compromise in car theft, there have been positive steps taken, but the issue of keyless thefts still persists. According to a spokesperson, the support from the police in tracking stolen cars has been exceptional, leading to a high recovery rate of 95%. However, there are concerns about the judicial system’s approach to car theft, with some believing it to be a victimless crime that insurers will simply cover.

Despite the efforts of law enforcement in bringing car crime offenders to justice, there is a discrepancy in the sentencing that can be disheartening. The spokesperson highlighted the strain on police resources when pursuing these cases, especially when faced with the challenge of identifying and dismantling ‘chop shops’ where stolen vehicles are broken down for parts.

While the discovery of chop shops may seem like a victory, it is often just scratching the surface of a larger organized crime operation. Those apprehended at the scene are typically not the masterminds behind the thefts, as the orchestrators are often located overseas. This poses a significant challenge in effectively dismantling these criminal networks and holding the true culprits accountable.

Investigating these complex cases consumes valuable resources that could be allocated elsewhere within law enforcement, posing a dilemma for the already stretched thin blue line. The intricate nature of car theft operations underscores the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to tackling this pervasive issue.
