BMW Begins Testing Next Generation X7 SUV

BMW has recently been spotted testing the next iteration of their popular X7 luxury SUV, confirming that it will be getting a second generation. The prototype, heavily camouflaged, was seen on public roads for the first time, giving us a glimpse of what to expect from the new model.

One key detail that stood out on the prototype was the presence of functional exhaust pipes, indicating that the new X7 will continue to use combustion power. However, there are also rumors of an electric version in the works. The design seems to build upon the current X7, with similarities in the C-pillar suggesting a major update rather than a completely new design.

The upcoming X7 will be built on an upgraded version of the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) structure, which is currently used in the existing X7, as well as the 7 Series and i7 saloons. This will ensure a solid foundation for the new SUV.

Despite the camouflaged exterior, some design cues can still be seen, such as the split-headlight design and the gloss-black front fascia that will be a signature feature of BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse cars. These include models like the 3 Series, X3, and 5 Series.

While BMW has not provided a specific launch date for the new X7, documents sent to US dealers hint at a possible arrival in 2027, following the release of the new X5. BMW’s R&D boss, Frank Weber, has emphasized the need for flexibility in the development process, highlighting the importance of integrating various components to create a diverse and innovative product lineup.

“There is an increasing realization that the art of mastering diversity in your portfolio lies in how you use and network major components – engines, motors, battery cells, on-board computers, control units, app functions, and software upgrades,” Weber explained.
