Nio Onvo L80 is 5-seat version of L90, regulatory filing shows

Nio’s sub-brand Onvo has recently made a significant change to its upcoming L90 model, introducing a new variant known as the L80. This modification was revealed in a regulatory filing that showcased alterations to the seating layout of the L90, transitioning from a six-seat configuration to a 6/5/7-seat layout. The L80 designation has been added to the rear badge of the L90, indicating that both models are essentially different seating layout options of the same vehicle.

The L90, which debuted at the 2025 Shanghai auto show in April, serves as Onvo’s flagship SUV and offers both 6-seat and 7-seat configurations. On the other hand, the L80 is a five-seat version that prioritizes space efficiency and is based on a native electric architecture. According to Eric Yu, Nio’s assistant vice president and Onvo product head, the L80 is scheduled for an official launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, while the L90, designed as a three-row seating option, is set to be released in the third quarter.

It is worth noting that the L80 and L90 models share the majority of their components and research and development resources due to their similarity in design and construction. This strategic decision is crucial for Nio, especially considering the company’s recent financial challenges. In the first quarter of the year, Nio reported a net loss of RMB 6.75 billion, indicating a 30.19 percent increase compared to the previous year. However, this figure represents a 5.08 percent decrease from the fourth quarter of 2024, as outlined in the company’s earnings report.

Looking ahead, Nio aims to achieve monthly sales of 25,000 units for its three Onvo models by the fourth quarter of the year. This ambitious target was emphasized by William Li, Nio’s founder, chairman, and CEO, during an earnings call in June. With a focus on innovation and adaptability, Nio continues to expand its product lineup and push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology.
