BYD, a leading new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, recently added a new vessel to its fleet, the BYD Xi’an, with another ship, the BYD Changsha, soon to follow suit. The BYD Xi’an, the fifth car carrier in BYD’s fleet, was delivered in Yizheng, Jiangsu province on June 21 and embarked on its maiden voyage shortly after. This vessel, along with its sister ship BYD Shenzhen, boasts a capacity of 9,200 standard vehicle loading spaces, making them among the largest LNG dual-fuel car carriers in operation globally.

Named after Xi’an in Shaanxi province, the BYD Xi’an measures 219.9 meters in length, 37.7 meters in beam, and features 16 decks with a service speed of 19 knots. This new addition to the fleet aims to enhance BYD’s delivery efficiency in overseas markets, reduce logistics costs, and shorten transportation cycles. The company’s existing fleet includes four operational car carriers, namely BYD Explorer No. 1, BYD Hefei, BYD Changzhou, and BYD Shenzhen, with the latter being the only one equipped with 9,200 standard loading spaces.

The upcoming BYD Changsha, BYD’s sixth car carrier, is expected to commence its maiden voyage on June 24. Like the BYD Xi’an, the BYD Changsha will also have a capacity of 9,200 vehicles. Both vessels recently completed their sea trials, signaling their readiness to join the fleet and contribute to BYD’s global expansion efforts.

BYD has been experiencing robust sales growth in recent years, positioning itself as the world’s largest NEV maker. With a 2025 sales target of 5.5 million vehicles, including over 800,000 from overseas markets, the company continues to solidify its presence in the global automotive industry. In the first five months of the year, BYD recorded significant sales figures, selling 1,763,369 NEVs globally, marking a year-on-year increase of 38.70 percent. The company also saw a substantial uptick in overseas sales, with 374,217 vehicles sold in international markets, representing a 112.13 percent year-on-year growth.
