Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) has reached a significant milestone in engine testing by employing its Cold Bed Engine Testing technology to evaluate over 4.25 million engines. This innovative system uses electricity, potentially from renewable sources, to power the testing process, eliminating the need for traditional fuels, coolants, and water. Introduced in 2013, the Cold Bed Engine Testing technology has allowed Hyundai Motor India to ensure precision and quality in engine performance while reducing emissions.

The system utilizes advanced sensors to monitor various performance parameters, contributing to the company’s sustainable manufacturing practices. HMIL’s whole-time director and chief manufacturing officer, Gopalakrishnan CS, highlighted the company’s commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing. By testing over 4.25 million engines using zero-emission Cold Bed Engine Testing technology, HMIL has curbed over 2 million kg of COâ‚‚ emissions and achieved $1 million in operational savings.

Each engine undergoes testing in a Cold Bed Engine Testing station where an electric motor rotates the crankshaft, allowing HMIL to monitor critical performance indicators without burning fuel. The integration of Industry 4.0 technology further enhances the system by digitally storing test data for future analysis and development.

In addition to their engine testing achievements, Hyundai Motor and Kia have partnered with the South Korean government to develop and commercialize a next-generation, connected digital tachograph for commercial vehicles.

As Hyundai Motor India celebrates its 30th year of ‘Make in India, Made for the World,’ the company remains dedicated to pioneering advanced solutions that shape a greener, smarter future for the automotive industry. This commitment to innovation and sustainability reinforces HMIL’s vision of responsible mobility and eco-friendly manufacturing practices.
