CATL to introduce battery swap tech to Europe

CATL, a leading battery manufacturer, is set to introduce its cutting-edge battery swap and recycling technology to Europe, as reported by the Financial Times. Jiang Li, the board secretary of CATL, highlighted the immense potential of battery swap technology in Europe, emphasizing its ability to reduce battery costs and enhance battery lifespan.

The company’s ambitious plans include establishing 1,000 battery swap stations in China by the end of this year and increasing that number to 10,000 within the next three years. Li mentioned during an event in London that CATL has already engaged in discussions with automakers in Europe regarding the implementation of battery swap technology.

Nio, a prominent Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has been a pioneer in the battery swap sector, operating numerous swap stations in China and Europe. This technology enables vehicles to swiftly exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones, offering customers a convenient and efficient way to power their EVs. Nio also offers a unique BaaS (battery as a service) option, allowing customers to rent the battery pack while purchasing the vehicle body.

CATL made its foray into the battery swap industry in January 2022 and unveiled standardized Choco-SEB passenger vehicle battery packs in December of the same year. These standardized battery packs, named #20 and #25, are part of CATL’s strategy to streamline the battery swap process and improve compatibility across different vehicle models.

A significant collaboration between Nio and CATL was announced on March 18, aiming to create the world’s largest battery swap service network. This partnership will see Nio’s Firefly sub-brand vehicles adopting CATL’s Choco-Swap technical standards, further enhancing the interoperability of battery swap technology in the market.

In a recent development, Changan delivered the first 1,000 units of Oshan 520 sedans built on CATL’s battery swap standard for use as cabs, showcasing the growing adoption of this innovative technology in the automotive industry.

Overall, CATL’s strategic focus on expanding its battery swap technology to Europe demonstrates its commitment to advancing sustainable solutions in the EV sector. With partnerships with key players like Nio and a clear roadmap for growth, CATL is poised to revolutionize the way electric vehicles are powered and serviced in the future.
