Lotus is shifting its focus towards developing high-powered plug-in hybrid technology for its sports cars, moving away from its initial plans for a purely electric future. The company’s CEO, Feng Qingfeng, recently announced that they are currently testing their upcoming ‘Hyper Hybrid’ technology in sports cars to explore its feasibility.
The decision comes as Lotus reported a significant 42% decline in sales in the first quarter of the year, selling only 1274 cars. The drop in sales was attributed to the waning interest in high-end electric vehicles and the challenges posed by US tariff barriers. These barriers forced Lotus to halt deliveries of the Emira sports car in the US and discontinue sales of the Eletre electric SUV.
The first model to feature the Hyper Hybrid PHEV technology is set to be revealed later this year, with sales expected to commence in the first quarter of 2026. Sources have indicated that the model will likely be a version of the Eletre electric SUV. Lotus plans to distribute the demand for this innovative drivetrain evenly across its key markets in Europe, China, and the US.
The shift towards performance-focused hybrid drivetrains marks a strategic pivot for Lotus, as the company reevaluates its previous commitment to becoming an all-electric brand by 2028. While plans for an electric replacement for the Emira have been postponed, Lotus sees an opportunity to cater to markets where electrification is mandated by regulations by offering plug-in hybrids.
Feng emphasized the importance of offering Hyper Hybrid technology in both lifestyle cars and sports cars, acknowledging that pure electric sports cars may not attract as much attention in the market. Lotus has previously experimented with a plug-in hybrid version of the Evora sports car, featuring a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a 17kWh battery, offering a potential EV-only range of 35 miles.
The company’s strategic shift towards developing high-powered plug-in hybrid technology reflects its commitment to innovation and adaptability in response to evolving market trends and regulatory requirements. With the upcoming launch of the Hyper Hybrid technology, Lotus is poised to redefine the sports car segment and solidify its position as a leader in cutting-edge automotive technology.
