Mercedes Will Use Fake Gearshifts in AMG Supercar

Mercedes-AMG is on a mission to make electric cars more exciting, and they are taking inspiration from successful attempts by other manufacturers. At the launch of the AMG GT XX concept, Mercedes Group tech chief Markus Schäfer revealed plans to incorporate fake gearshifts in their electric vehicles to enhance the driving experience. This move is aimed at appealing to internal combustion engine enthusiasts who may be hesitant to switch to electric power.

In an interview with Autocar, Schäfer emphasized the importance of capturing the emotional side of driving, including factors like noise, vibration, and gearshift feel. By adding simulated gearshifts similar to those found in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, Mercedes-AMG hopes to recreate the sensation of driving a traditional gas-powered vehicle. This feature, combined with fake engine noise, will help create a more immersive driving experience for performance EV enthusiasts.

The production version of the AMG GT XX will also feature speakers mounted in the headlights to mimic the sound of a V-8 engine. The concept car is equipped with three axial flux motors, producing a total of 1,340 horsepower. These motors, sourced from UK company Yasa, are crucial for meeting the high expectations of AMG buyers in terms of power, drivability, and track performance.

Schäfer acknowledged the challenge of convincing hardcore V-8 fans to embrace electric vehicles, noting that a pure-electric car may not be enough to win them over. By incorporating elements like fake gearshifts, simulated engine noise, and high-performance motors, Mercedes-AMG aims to provide a compelling alternative for enthusiasts looking to make the switch to electric power.

Overall, the AMG GT XX concept represents a bold step towards creating exciting and emotionally engaging electric vehicles. With a focus on authenticity, performance, and driving experience, Mercedes-AMG is setting a new standard for electric car enthusiasts.
