BYD has achieved a significant milestone by producing its 1 millionth Seagull compact electric vehicle (EV), solidifying the model’s status as the company’s most affordable option. The Seagull, which was first introduced in China in April 2023 with a starting price of RMB 73,800 ($10,300), has quickly become BYD’s best-selling single model, with a record 60,131 units sold in May.

To mark this achievement, BYD unveiled a new variant of the Seagull at a recent event, named the Dolphin Surf in Europe. Priced at RMB 78,800, this new variant offers a CLTC range of 405 kilometers. Despite lacking some features found in higher-priced models, such as panoramic imaging and a dashcam, the new Seagull variant provides an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers.

In addition to the new variant, BYD also offers financing options for the Seagull, including 0 percent down payment and 0 interest. Consumers can take advantage of national trade-in subsidies of up to RMB 20,000, along with trade-in subsidies from BYD totaling up to RMB 4,000.

The success of the Seagull is evident in its sales performance, with 233,126 units sold from January to May, representing a 50.43 percent year-on-year increase. As of the end of May, cumulative sales of the Seagull reached 992,637 units. The model’s popularity has extended beyond China, with BYD launching the Seagull in 15 European countries under the name Dolphin Surf, offering three price tiers based on range.

With the Seagull’s continued success and expansion into new markets, BYD demonstrates its commitment to providing affordable and efficient electric vehicles to consumers worldwide. The company’s innovative approach to EV manufacturing and sales has solidified its position as a leader in the industry, setting the stage for further growth and development in the future.
