The big car making big money for Škoda

The automotive industry is a fascinating one, with various segments catering to different customer preferences. One segment that has seen a decline in offerings from OEMs is the large sedan, hatchback, or wagon category. Many automakers argue that this segment is shrinking and is better suited for premium brands like Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, or Audi. However, there are still manufacturers like Toyota, Honda, Geely, BYD, Hyundai & Kia, and the Volkswagen Group that continue to produce vehicles in the 4.8-5.0m long class.

Škoda Auto, for instance, understands that not everyone is drawn to luxury badges and has found success with its Superb model in Europe. Despite its limited presence in markets like China and India, the Czech OEM has been setting record profits and sales numbers in Europe. In fact, it recently surpassed BMW to become the third-largest brand in the region, posing a potential threat to second-placed Toyota.

The Škoda Superb, known for its spacious interiors and premium feel, has garnered a loyal following. The current generation offers a more upscale interior than many VW or Audi models, focusing on sensibility, tactility, and silence rather than technology overload. The car is designed with user-friendly features like physical knobs for volume control and mirror adjustment, avoiding the frustrations of touch-sensitive controls.

Despite not being a high-volume seller globally, the Superb remains an important vehicle for Škoda, with production numbers steadily increasing with each generation. The latest model, built on the MQB Evo platform, offers a range of engine options, including a petrol plug-in hybrid variant with an impressive electric range of up to 75 miles.

While the Superb may not be the top seller in its class globally, it caters to a niche market of buyers looking for a long, comfortable, and reasonably priced large car. Škoda has no plans to transition the Superb into an all-electric vehicle anytime soon, as loyal customers appreciate its current design and performance.

In conclusion, the Škoda Superb continues to be a standout choice in the large car segment, offering a blend of comfort, practicality, and value for money. With pricing starting from GBP35,925 for the hatchback and GBP37,225 for the estate, the Superb remains a compelling option for buyers looking for a spacious and refined vehicle.
