Geely Launches Eponymous Car Brand in the UK

Geely, the Chinese automotive giant known for owning LEVC, Lotus, Polestar, and Volvo, is set to introduce its own brand of cars to the UK market. The first model to hit UK showrooms will be the Geely EX5, an electric crossover designed to compete with the likes of the Skoda Elroq, Kia EV3, and Renault Megane.

Although UK specifications have yet to be finalized, Geely has revealed that the EX5 has been evaluated by Lotus Engineering to ensure its suitability for European roads.

On a global scale, the EX5 is offered with a choice of 49.5kWh or 60.2kWh battery packs, with the larger option providing a range of up to 264 miles on the WLTP test cycle. The batteries can be charged at a rate of up to 100kW on a DC connection, allowing the larger battery to be replenished from 30-80% in just 20 minutes.

Equipped with a single front-mounted motor producing 215bhp, the EX5 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds. Inside, the crossover can comfortably seat five occupants and features a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen.

While pricing details for the UK market have not been disclosed, the EX5 starts at $40,990 (£19,500) in Australia, suggesting a price range of £25,000 to £30,000 in the UK.

Geely has identified fleet buyers as a key target market for the EX5, as they currently represent a significant portion of EV sales. The company is confident that the model will appeal to UK consumers.

Initial deliveries of the Geely EX5 are scheduled to commence between October and the end of the year, with additional Geely models expected to follow in the coming year. This move aligns with Geely’s strategy to expand into new markets and increase its global presence by adding over 300 non-Chinese dealers and service centers by 2025.
