Is the Audi E-tron GT reliable?

When it comes to the reliability of the Audi E-tron GT, there are a few things to keep in mind. While the GT has fewer moving parts compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, it is not immune to issues. Dealerships and independent specialists are well-versed in the common problems that may arise with this electric vehicle.

Most of the issues that plague the GT are software-related, but they can often be rectified through a simple update at a dealership. It is advisable to opt for a dealer warranty to cover major components like the battery or motor in case of any failures.

Drivetrain: One common issue to watch out for is the dead throttle pedal, especially after stopping at traffic lights. A software update can usually fix this, so it’s essential to check the car’s history for any previous updates. Additionally, some 2023 models were recalled due to a battery fire risk, so make sure this has been addressed.

Gearbox: Keep an eye out for the ‘Drive system malfunction’ message on the dashboard, as it can indicate various gearbox issues. In some cases, a new gearbox and coolant system may be required, but a software update could potentially resolve the issue.

Tyres: Due to the GT’s powerful performance, the wide 265-section tyres may wear out quickly. It’s important to check the condition of the tyres, as replacing a set of four can be quite costly.

Brakes: Issues with the brakes, such as a long brake pedal or fluctuating pressure, could signal brake module failure. Replacement costs can vary, with a new servo typically costing between £600 and £1000. It’s also crucial to ensure that any brake hose repairs have been conducted, especially for 2022-24 models, as front axle hose tears could lead to brake failure.

Electrics: The GT’s cameras, infotainment screens, and rear spoiler are prone to software glitches. Dealer updates are usually sufficient to resolve these issues. However, a warning message indicating an ‘Electrical system fault’ should not be ignored, as it could point to a front motor coolant leak that may require replacement at a significant cost.

An owner’s view

Dusan Prastalo: As an owner of a 2022 E-tron GT, Dusan Prastalo praises the car for its striking design, high-quality interior, and powerful yet smooth driving experience. Despite initial concerns about battery longevity, he was won over by the GT’s comfort, range of 260-280 miles, and efficiency of up to 3.9mpkWh. However, he did encounter some early issues such as recalls, a brief SOS fault, noisy brakes, and rattling plastic trim. Dusan notes that the build quality of the GT does not feel as premium as some of his older Audi models, but he still appreciates the overall driving experience and performance.

Also worth knowing

Regular servicing of E-tron GTs is recommended every two years or 20,000 miles by a dealer or specialist.

If you prefer more grip, consider swapping the standard Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres for Michelin Pilot Sport 4s.

E-tron GTs come in various trims, with Vorsprung and RS versions available. The Carbon Black RS model features sporty black styling, while the range-topping Carbon Vorsprung variant boasts a carbonfibre roof and Alcantara cabin trim.
