BYD Introduces B5: A Premium Plug-In Hybrid 4×4 Competing with Land Rover Defender

BYD is set to take on the Land Rover Defender in the UK market with its latest offering, the B5. This premium plug-in hybrid 4×4 boasts impressive off-road capabilities and supercar levels of power.

Originally launched as the Bao 5 in China last year, the B5 is now making its debut in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The vehicle is expected to hit showrooms early next year, positioning itself as a direct competitor to the Defender 110.

Part of BYD’s SUV sub-brand Fangchengbao, the B5 will be badged as Denza in the UK. It will join the premium brand’s Z9 GT shooting brake, expanding BYD’s presence in the UK market.

Founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, Denza is now fully owned by the Chinese automaker. The decision to import the B5 aligns with BYD’s strategy to diversify its powertrain offerings and cater to new market segments.

Stella Li, the company’s president, expressed confidence in the B5’s success in the UK market, citing the country’s affinity for large premium SUVs. The B5 is expected to resonate with UK consumers who appreciate off-road capabilities in a spacious and luxurious package.

While specific details about the B5’s specifications have not been confirmed, it is likely to closely resemble its Chinese counterpart. The B5 is built on a ‘DMO Super-Hybrid Off-Road’ ladder-frame platform and features a plug-in hybrid system powered by a 1.5-litre turbo engine and electric motors on each axle, delivering an impressive 677bhp and 561lb ft of torque.
