Tesla to Launch Long-Wheelbase Model Y in China
Tesla is set to introduce a long-wheelbase version of the popular Model Y in China, as confirmed by a recent filing with the Ministry of Industry and Information in the country.
Compared to the standard Model Y, the extended version has been elongated by 186mm, with a significant portion of the added length (150mm) situated between the front and rear axles. Additionally, it boasts a slightly increased height of 1668mm, as opposed to the regular model’s 1624mm.
One of the standout features of the new Model Y variant is its interior layout, which includes three rows of two seats, providing a total seating capacity of six individuals.
Under the hood, the long-wheelbase Model Y will be equipped with a dual-motor powertrain generating a combined output of 456bhp, indicating that it could rival the performance capabilities of the previous Model Y Performance model.
This development comes at a crucial time for Tesla in China, as the recently updated Model Y has been facing challenges in the market. Sales have seen a decline of nearly 18% compared to the same period last year, with prospects for a rapid recovery appearing slim.
By introducing the extended-wheelbase version of the Model Y, tailored to meet the Chinese market’s demand for ample interior space, Tesla aims to stabilize its position in the region.
The official unveiling of the Model Y L is scheduled for this autumn. While Tesla has not confirmed whether this variant will be available outside of China, similar models introduced in the Chinese market typically remain exclusive to that region.
