Ford recalls over 694,000 vehicles due to fuel injector issue

Ford Motor Company has recently issued a global recall of 694,271 vehicles due to a potential issue with the fuel injector that could lead to underhood fires. The affected models include certain versions of the 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and the 2020-2022 Ford Escape equipped with 1.5L engines.

The fuel injectors in question were supplied by Dumarey Flowmotion Technologies, based in Italy, as reported by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA highlighted that the fuel injectors could crack, allowing fuel or vapor to accumulate near ignition sources, potentially leading to a fire risk in approximately 0.3% of the affected vehicles.

To address this issue, Ford estimates a total cost of around $570 million for the recall, which will be reflected in their second-quarter 2025 results. The company’s Field Review Committee (FRC) approved Field Service Actions (FSA) to update the engine control software in order to detect a cracked fuel injector and disable the high-pressure fuel pump to minimize the risk of fires.

Customers may notice a fuel odor inside and outside the vehicle, as well as smoke or flames from the engine compartment or underbody if there is a fire. Ford has detected eight vehicles that experienced underhood fires, with six of them not having the updated engine control software. However, the company stated that there have been no reported injuries related to these incidents.

In response to a recall query from the NHTSA last year, Ford agreed to pay a $165 million civil penalty for failing to recall vehicles with defective rearview cameras. The final remedy for the current fuel injector issue is still under development, and affected owners will be notified by mail to have the necessary service performed at a Ford or Lincoln dealer at no charge.

In addition to the recall, Ford is currently nominated for the prestigious Just Auto Excellence Awards, which celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the industry. Nominations are now open for companies to showcase their achievements and gain global recognition for their contributions to the automotive sector.
