Thousands of super-cheap Amazon e-bikes recalled after fires

VIVI e-bikes, a popular budget-friendly brand available on major online retailers like Amazon and Walmart, is currently facing a significant recall affecting approximately 24,000 electric bicycles due to fire risks. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced that the lithium-ion batteries included with VIVI e-bikes have the potential to overheat, catch fire, and pose serious risks of injury or even death to users.

According to the recall notice issued by VIVI, there have been 14 reported cases of the e-bike batteries overheating, with three incidents of the batteries actually catching fire. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of these incidents. The affected batteries were shipped with a range of VIVI electric bikes sold between December 2020 and November 2023, with prices ranging from $365 to $950, making them some of the most affordable full-size e-bikes on the market.

A comprehensive list of the VIVI models affected by the recall can be found on the CPSC website. These e-bikes were primarily sold online through platforms such as Walmart.com, Amazon.com, eBay.com, Wish.com, Sears.com, Wayfair.com, Aliexpress.com, and VIVI’s own website (viviebikes.com).

Users who have purchased a VIVI e-bike are urged to immediately check if their model is included in the recall and to stop using the bike if it is. VIVI is offering free replacement batteries for affected consumers and advises them to dispose of the recalled batteries at a household hazardous waste collection center.

This recall highlights the growing concerns surrounding the safety of low-cost e-bikes available on online marketplaces. While affordability has made e-bikes more accessible, it has also raised concerns about potential safety risks, particularly with regards to poorly made batteries. UL certification, which is the most common safety standard for e-bikes in the US, plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of electric vehicles.

As consumers become more aware of the importance of safety certifications, reputable e-bike brands that prominently display these certifications have gained higher consumer confidence. This recall serves as a reminder of the significance of adhering to safety standards in the manufacturing of electric vehicles.

In conclusion, it is essential for consumers to exercise caution when purchasing budget e-bikes and to prioritize safety features, including the use of certified batteries from reputable brands. Investing in a quality e-bike with proper safety certifications can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of users and their surroundings.
