BYD, a leading Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, has achieved a significant milestone in Australia, with the delivery of its 60,000th vehicle in the country. This achievement underscores the company’s strong growth and commitment to the Australian market.

Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD, personally handed over the 60,000th vehicle to a local customer in Melbourne on July 12, highlighting the company’s dedication to serving Australian customers. The delivery of a record 8,156 vehicles in June alone marked a 368 percent increase year-on-year, showcasing BYD’s rapid expansion in the region.

The success of the BYD Shark 6 hybrid pickup truck played a crucial role in this achievement, with the model selling 2,993 units in June, accounting for 37 percent of BYD’s local sales. Overall, the Shark 6 sold 10,424 units in Australia in the first half of the year, comprising 45 percent of BYD’s total local sales of 23,355 units during the same period.

Looking ahead, BYD anticipates its deliveries in Australia to surpass 40,000 units by the end of 2025. The company entered the Australian passenger vehicle market in August 2022 with the introduction of the Atto 3, later followed by the launch of the Shark 6 hybrid pickup truck in October 2024.

The Shark 6, initially introduced in Mexico as the BYD Shark, has been renamed Shark 6 for overseas markets, excluding China where the model is not available. Alongside the Atto 3 and Shark 6, BYD offers a range of other models in Australia, including the Sealion 6, Sealion 7, Seal, and Dolphin.

In terms of market performance, BYD emerged as the top-selling Chinese automaker in Australia in June, surpassing competitors like Great Wall Motor and SAIC. Chinese brands collectively accounted for 14.2 percent of the Australian automotive market in the first half of the year, with BYD leading the NEV segment with a 38.7 percent market share.

BYD’s stable pricing strategy in overseas markets has contributed to its profitability, as noted by Wang Chuanfu. This consistent approach to pricing has not only bolstered the company’s financial performance but also enhanced its competitiveness in the global automotive industry.

As BYD continues to expand its presence and deliver innovative electric vehicles to customers worldwide, its success in Australia serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility and driving the transition towards a greener future.
