Maserati Considering Adding Plug-In Hybrid Powertrains to Line-Up

Maserati is exploring the possibility of introducing plug-in hybrid powertrains to its range of vehicles as it aims to bridge the gap between traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric vehicles (EV). One of the new electrified models that could feature a next-generation Quattroporte hybrid.

Currently, Maserati offers three different powertrain options across its lineup: pure-V6, mild-hybrid turbo four-cylinder, and pure-electric. However, CEO Santo Ficili acknowledges the need to provide customers with a variety of propulsion choices as the company prepares for an electric future.

Ficili emphasized the importance of staying connected with customers during this period of transition, stating, “We need to talk with our customers because they are a bit confused at this time. You can imagine: PHEV, BEV, mild hybrid… We need to stay in touch with our customers.”

While Maserati envisions a future that includes fully electric vehicles, Ficili is uncertain about the timeline for this transition. In the meantime, the company is considering the development of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines to meet evolving technological requirements.

Although Maserati’s current vehicle platforms may not easily accommodate plug-in hybrid powertrains, sister brand Alfa Romeo is preparing to launch new models on Stellantis’s versatile STLA Large platform, capable of supporting ICE, EV, and hybrid drivetrains.

Ficili hinted at the possibility of utilizing the STLA architecture for future Maserati models and suggested closer collaboration between Maserati and Alfa Romeo could lead to more interconnected vehicles. This synergy opens up opportunities for the next generation Giulia and Stelvio models to serve as the basis for a new Quattroporte and Levante, offering a choice of electric and hybrid powertrains.
