Tesla Model Y Performance Prototype Spotted Testing in California
A Tesla Model Y Performance prototype was recently spotted testing in California, signaling the imminent launch of the electric SUV in the US market. The prototype, featuring the Juniper design refresh, was seen near Tesla’s Palo Alto engineering headquarters by an avid Electrek reader.
Tesla unveiled the refreshed Model Y, nicknamed ‘Juniper’, in January 2025. However, the performance version of the popular electric SUV was not released alongside the design refresh. With the automaker halting orders for the Model Y Performance, enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting its return with the Juniper design enhancements.
The camouflaged Model Y prototype spotted in California unmistakably bore the hallmarks of a Performance variant with the Juniper design. The prototype showcased Plaid 20″ wheels typically reserved for performance models, as well as larger red brake calipers, a signature feature of Tesla’s performance vehicles.
Prior to the refresh, the Model Y Performance boasted an EPA-estimated range of 277-285 miles and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The upcoming Model Y Performance with the Juniper refresh is anticipated to improve on these metrics while incorporating other design refresh elements such as a light bar, ambient interior lighting, a rear screen, and more.
The previous Model Y Performance was priced at $51,500 in the US, and the new version is expected to launch in the coming months.
