Straight-six diesel shootout: Alpina vs Mercedes vs Range Rover

The Last of the Diesel Heroes

As we gather three diesel heroes for this test, we are faced with a dwindling pool of candidates. It seems that BMW is phasing out diesel entirely, with only their SUVs still offering diesel power in the UK. If you’re looking for a sleek and sporty Bavarian car, your best option might be an Alpina, but even those will soon be a thing of the past.

Alpina, known for their luxury and performance, is on the verge of being absorbed by BMW. Rumors of a Maybach rivalry suggest that models like the D4 S Gran Coupé may not be around for much longer. Despite this uncertainty, the D4 S sets the bar high in terms of size, price, and performance. Each car in our trio boasts a straight-six, twin-turbo engine with a hint of electrified assistance, delivering around 350bhp through an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Stepping into the Alpina, you are immediately struck by its glamour and luxury. The interior exudes opulence, and the rarity of the car is evident in its unique design. The driving experience is smooth and confident, with the Alpina’s plush suspension effortlessly gliding over rough roads.

While most Alpina buyers opt for the petrol-powered B3 or B4 models, those who choose the diesel option are discovering a hidden gem. The B57 six-cylinder engine has been in use since 2015, appearing in various BMW models and even finding a home in the rugged Ineos Grenadier.

Despite the uncertain future of diesel-powered cars, these diesel heroes prove that there is still value and performance to be found in this traditional powertrain. As we bid farewell to these iconic models, we can only hope that future innovations will continue to push the boundaries of automotive excellence.
