ZF LIFETEC Breaks Ground on OPW Airbag Project in Rizhao, China

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- ZF LIFETEC, a renowned specialist in passive safety technology for vehicle occupants, recently initiated the construction of its new one-piece woven (OPW) airbag production project at its Rizhao plant in Shandong Province. This groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of the third phase of development for the facility, signaling a significant expansion for the company.

The new project, spanning an area of approximately 15,000 square meters, has already completed initial groundwork, design planning, and engineering preparations. Anticipated to commence full-scale production by 2027, the facility is expected to have an annual capacity exceeding five million OPW airbags. This strategic move will enhance ZF LIFETEC’s supply capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Market analysts predict a steady growth of around 4% in the global automotive passive safety sector, with a notable surge of 8.9% in airbag demand—outpacing the overall growth rate of vehicle production. By investing early in the OPW segment, ZF LIFETEC is well-positioned to capitalize on market opportunities and fortify its competitive position.

Having commenced operations in Rizhao in 2022, ZF LIFETEC has successfully completed two production phases, delivering airbag cushions, steering wheels, and other components to leading automakers worldwide. The OPW project is designed to meet the growing global demand for high-performance airbag cushions, while also enhancing supply chain efficiency and flexibility.

With this expansion in China, ZF LIFETEC aims to cater to local customer requirements, expedite the transition from research and development to mass production, and deepen collaborations with Chinese brands and new energy vehicle manufacturers. This strategic approach will drive innovation in intelligent safety systems and reinforce the company’s foothold in the market.
