The UK Government Extends Plug-in Van and Truck Grant Until 2027

The government has announced the extension of its Plug-in Van and Truck Grant, providing discounts of up to £25,000 on new commercial electric vehicles (EVs) until 2027. Originally set to expire in April next year, the grant was introduced in 2012 for vans and 2016 for trucks to address the high levels of emissions from commercial transport in the UK.

According to government data, trucks and vans contribute to over a third of CO2 emissions on UK roads, highlighting the importance of supporting businesses in transitioning to electric vehicles. The current grant offers discounts of up to £2500 for small vans, £5000 for large vans, £16,000 for small trucks, and £25,000 for large trucks. The government plans to increase these grant levels to further promote the adoption of EVs.

The extension of the grant is part of a £650 million fund allocated by the government to boost EV uptake and enhance the country’s charging infrastructure. This funding also supports the Electric Car Grant, which was recently introduced to incentivize the purchase of electric cars.

By extending the grants, the government aims to facilitate a smoother transition to electric vehicles in the UK’s logistics sector, leading to job creation and positioning the country as a clean energy leader. Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood emphasized the importance of transitioning to cleaner transport for healthier communities and economic growth.

Jambu Palaniappan, CEO of Checkatrade, praised the grant extension, highlighting the benefits it offers to tradespeople across the UK. Lower operating costs, exemption from charges like ULEZ, and greater planning certainty are among the advantages that EVs bring to businesses.
