The Volkswagen Passat, like the Superb and many other VW Group cars, utilizes the latest version of the MQB Evo platform, known as the ‘B9’. This platform brings two significant advancements to the Passat.

One of the key improvements is in the in-car technology, which has been updated to provide a more advanced and seamless driving experience. Additionally, on the mechanical side, the Passat now offers a plug-in hybrid option that features a large 25.7kWh hybrid drive battery. This battery can be accommodated with minimal impact on luggage space, thanks to advancements in battery chemistry and its placement under the rear seat, with the fuel tank located under the boot floor.

In Germany, the Passat is offered with a wide range of petrol and diesel powertrains, as well as both front- and four-wheel drive options. However, in the UK, Volkswagen has chosen to limit the available powertrain options.

At launch, all Passats in the UK were equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The entry-level eTSI mild hybrid version produces 148bhp with a little assistance from an integrated starter-generator.

There are also two plug-in hybrid options available, both featuring the same engine paired with a 114bhp electric motor integrated into a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The entry-level plug-in hybrid has a system output of 201bhp and 258lb ft of torque, while the range-topping version increases this to 268bhp and 295lb ft with an additional 27bhp from the petrol engine.

The Passat’s large battery can be replenished more quickly than before, with the ability to charge at 11kW on AC power and rapid-charge at up to 40kW on DC power.

Volkswagen has recently introduced a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol-four engine to the Passat’s UK lineup. This engine delivers 201bhp and 236lb ft of torque to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, allowing the estate model to accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds.

The Passat has undergone significant growth since the eighth generation, now matching its Czech counterpart in size. It is 144mm longer than its predecessor, with some of that length coming from the 50mm longer wheelbase and the rest from extended overhangs.

Overall, the Volkswagen Passat B9 offers a range of powertrain options, advanced in-car technology, and increased size to provide a comfortable and efficient driving experience for its owners.
