The Seat Ateca: A Powerful Crossover Hatchback

The Seat Ateca we’re reviewing comes equipped with the Volkswagen Group’s ‘EA888’ 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, producing an impressive 296bhp and 295lb ft of torque. This makes it one of the most powerful crossover hatchbacks available. Additionally, there are options for a lower-powered version of the same engine with 187bhp or a smaller 1.5-litre unit with 148bhp.

One of the standout features of the Ateca is its powerful 296bhp engine. While there may be some lag, the throttle response is sharp, and the engine pulls smoothly to the 6500rpm redline. The engine’s refinement is evident, even in everyday driving situations, making it a standout feature of the car.

However, one area of improvement could be the automatic gearbox, which can feel sluggish at times. While it changes smoothly in Normal mode, it may not downshift when needed for quick acceleration, leading to a delay in power delivery. Nevertheless, switching to Cupra mode can help mitigate this issue, and the car still delivers impressive performance numbers, such as a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds.

Despite its weight and raised driving position, the Ateca maintains respectable fuel efficiency and practicality. It offers a comfortable and refined driving experience, with a 55-litre fuel tank providing good range for both city and highway driving. For those prioritizing fuel economy, the 1.5 TSI engine is a good option, although it may feel underpowered compared to the more powerful 2.0-litre engine.

In conclusion, the Seat Ateca is a powerful and refined crossover hatchback that offers a blend of performance and practicality. While there are some areas for improvement, such as the automatic gearbox and fuel economy in the lower-powered engine option, the overall driving experience is impressive. With its strong engine and comfortable driving dynamics, the Ateca is a compelling choice in the crossover hatchback segment.
