Shanghai (Gasgoo)- The Second Construction Co., Ltd of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau recently announced the completion of the world’s largest integrated die-casting plant ahead of schedule for Dongfeng Motor. The facility covers 47,000 square meters and serves as the core production base for Dongfeng Motor’s gigacasting industrialization project. The construction team utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) to streamline the building process, resulting in the plant being completed nearly a month ahead of contract deadlines.
The plant is equipped with dual integrated die-casting lines featuring 16,000-tonne and 10,000-tonne gigacasting machines, the largest of their kind globally. These production lines are expected to significantly increase output and efficiency in Dongfeng Motor’s new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturing.
Construction of the plant began in November 2024, with Dongfeng Motor being the first automaker to adopt 16,000-tonne gigacasting technology. Gigacasting involves using ultra-large machines to cast multiple parts into a single structural component under high pressure, strengthening vehicle bodies and enhancing safety and efficiency in NEV design.
The project will focus on research, production, and sales of super-large-scale gigacasting structural components for NEVs, including rear floor assemblies and battery casings. Mass production is set to commence in June 2026.
The development of the project is divided into two phases. The factory building has been completed in the first phase, with the casting lines to be rolled out gradually. With an investment of around 1 billion yuan, one 10,000-tonne and one 16,000-tonne line will be installed in the first phase, giving the plant an annual production capacity of 200,000-unit components. In the second phase, four more lines will be added, increasing total output to 600,000-unit components per year.
This groundbreaking project signifies a major step forward in the automotive industry, showcasing Dongfeng Motor’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in NEV manufacturing. With the completion of the world’s largest integrated die-casting plant, Dongfeng Motor is poised to lead the way in producing high-quality, efficient vehicles for the future.
