BYD’s luxury sub-brand, Yangwang, has unveiled its latest all-electric model in China, and it’s nothing short of a design marvel. The Yangwang U8L SUV, the fourth model from the ultra-luxury brand, comes with a unique feature called “Emergency Float Mode” similar to its predecessor, the U8. This new SUV can also perform tank turns, is powered by four motors, and boasts 24-karat emblems, making it one of the most expensive new BEVs in China.

Yangwang, which means “looking up” or “admire,” was introduced as an ultra-premium brand under the BYD umbrella in 2023. The brand made a splash at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show with the U8 SUV, showcasing its amphibious capabilities in emergencies and ability to crabwalk. Following the U8, Yangwang launched the U9 electric supercar with 1,200 horsepower, stealing the spotlight at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show.

In early 2024, Yangwang introduced its first sedan, the U7, boasting a range of 500 miles. The luxury brand then teased a third-row variant of the U8 SUV, the U8L, which promised to be longer and even more luxurious. The U8L has now been officially launched in China, starting at RMB 1.28 million ($179,800) for the “Dingshi Edition,” making it one of the priciest models among Chinese automakers.

The Yangwang U8L offers Rolls-Royce-style luxury, aiming to compete with top brands like Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover in the luxury SUV market in China. The U8L is longer and more spacious than its predecessor, featuring a new third row and four electric motors with a combined output of 880 kW (1,180 horsepower) and peak torque of 1,280 Nm. With a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.5 seconds, the U8L is no slouch in performance.

Equipped with BYD’s DiSus-P body control system and advanced ADAS technology, the U8L ensures premium comfort and stability on any terrain. The SUV also comes with unique features like emergency flotation mode, tank turns, and crabwalk, as well as luxurious amenities such as fully reclining seats, privacy curtains, and a rear storage fridge. While the U8L has a limited all-electric range of 200 km (124 miles), a hybrid range extender boosts the total range to 1,160 km (700 miles).

Overall, the Yangwang U8L is a true showcase of luxury and innovation in the electric vehicle market. With its striking design, advanced technology, and exceptional performance, this SUV sets a new standard for high-end electric vehicles. What are your thoughts on this impressive new model from Yangwang?
