Karl Ludvigsen, a renowned writer in the field of motoring, was the special guest on this week’s Autocar Meets podcast. With a career spanning various roles, Ludvigsen’s passion for cars began at a young age. He trained as an engineer and designer in the US post-World War II, while also delving into the world of motoring writing and editing.

During his career, Ludvigsen held management positions in large companies and eventually became the director of Ford of Europe, overseeing model development during the “fast Ford” era. He played a key role in the creation of the iconic Ford Escort RS1600i and other notable road and racing models.

In recent years, Ludvigsen has dedicated his time to expanding his collection of meticulously researched motoring books. His works cover a wide range of topics, from the life of engineer Reid Railton to the post-war history of the VW Beetle. One of his latest projects, “Power Unleashed”, is a three-volume series exploring the pioneers of supercharging and turbocharging in engine design.

Despite his age, Ludvigsen shows no signs of slowing down. He has plans for more books in the pipeline, including a biography of Harry Mundy, a renowned engine designer and Autocar journalist. For Ludvigsen, there is always more to explore and write about in the world of motoring.
