Alpine’s tri-motor tech to create ‘perceived lightness’ in heavy EVs

Alpine is set to revolutionize the electric car market with its innovative power management software that aims to maintain a feeling of “perceived lightness” in their upcoming EV models. This technology is crucial in counteracting the added weight of an electric powertrain and ensuring that Alpine’s signature sports car handling is preserved.

The current flagship model from Alpine, the lightweight A110 weighing just 1100kg, is renowned for its dynamic agility. However, with plans to launch seven electric cars by 2030, the brand faces the challenge of engineering vehicles that may be significantly heavier. For example, the compact A290 hot hatch already weighs around 1500kg, indicating a shift towards increased weight in electric models.

Alpine’s CEO, Philippe Krief, revealed at the Paris motor show that the brand is focused on creating EV powertrains that emulate the behavior of a light car, despite their actual weight. By utilizing a bespoke powertrain setup with two motors on the front axle and one at the rear, Alpine plans to use torque vectoring technology to finely tune power delivery and achieve a responsive driving experience.

Krief emphasized that although the A390 and other upcoming EVs may not be physically light, the perceived lightness created by the power management software will provide a quick, natural, and integrated driving feel. Professional drivers testing the cars with the systems on have praised the responsiveness, validating Alpine’s approach.

While Alpine continues to refine the weight of their EVs, Krief assured that they aim to be lighter than equivalent models from Renault and Nissan, thanks to their focus on dynamic behavior. The A390, currently in the final testing stages, will serve as a benchmark for the brand’s future electric offerings.

With Krief’s background as an engineer on renowned sports cars like the Ferrari 458 and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, Alpine is confident in delivering a five-seat electric SUV that prioritizes driving pleasure and immediate feedback. The CEO’s experience in creating agile and responsive vehicles is expected to translate seamlessly into Alpine’s electric lineup.
