Mercedes-AMG SL 63 E Performance review

Introducing the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 S E Performance: A Luxury GT with a Unique Twist

Similar to its predecessors, the SL 63 S E Performance boasts a folding cloth roof that can be effortlessly lowered or raised at lower speeds in urban areas. Unlike previous models, this SL has added occasional back seats, although they are quite small and more suitable for small suitcases than passengers.

The new cloth roof design takes up less space in the boot compared to the old metal folding roof, allowing for a fairly decent 213-litre boot capacity. However, the integration of PHEV batteries in the SL 63 S E Performance has significantly reduced the boot space by 103 litres, leaving only 110 litres available. This limited space, coupled with the mandatory charging cable bags, restricts larger luggage to the cabin area.

While the addition of back seats may seem practical, the lack of substantial boot space may disappoint long-time SL enthusiasts. The compromise between seating and storage may leave some questioning the true usability of the back seats when they can only accommodate minimal luggage.

Despite the shortcomings in boot space, the SL 63 S E Performance impresses with its spacious cabin. The driver’s seat offers a comfortable and supportive position, complemented by simple control layouts on the steering wheel. The overall interior quality surpasses Mercedes’ usual standards, although some may find it overly lavish for their taste.

One standout feature of the car is its portrait-orientated touchscreen infotainment system, which can be adjusted to prevent sunlight glare when the roof is down. Navigating the system is made easy with a cursor controller on the steering wheel, while access to ADAS functions is convenient and user-friendly.

Overall, the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 S E Performance combines luxury and innovation, with a few compromises in boot space that may not sit well with all consumers. Despite this, the car’s impressive cabin design and advanced technology make it a unique choice in the luxury GT segment.
