Nio is set to introduce a new brand called Firefly, which will feature an extended-range hybrid powertrain. This new product is expected to hit the market in 2026, according to reports from local media sources.
The electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has recently posted job listings for power NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) engineers, indicating its focus on developing air intake and exhaust systems for the upcoming Firefly brand. This move suggests Nio’s commitment to expanding its product lineup to include hybrid options.
While Nio’s founder and CEO, William Li, had previously stated that the company had no plans to release hybrid vehicles under its brands, the growing popularity of extended-range electric vehicles (EREV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) has prompted a shift in strategy. In fact, sales of PHEV models have seen significant growth in recent years, outperforming traditional battery electric vehicles (BEV) in terms of profitability.
Several other automakers, such as Avatr, Zeekr, IM Motors, and GAC Aion, have also entered the hybrid market or announced plans to do so. This trend towards hybridization is further evidenced by joint-venture carmakers like SAIC-GM, SAIC-Volkswagen, and FAW-Volkswagen increasing their investments in PHEV products.
The decision to introduce a hybrid powertrain under the Firefly brand aligns with the industry’s shift towards more sustainable and efficient vehicle options. Nio’s entry into the hybrid market is a strategic move to cater to evolving consumer preferences and capitalize on the growing demand for environmentally-friendly transportation solutions.
