The curious (business) case of the Peugeot 408

The Peugeot 408 is a unique model that stands out in the market for its high-end features and design. With the Peugeot family holding a significant stake in Stellantis, it’s no wonder that the brand continues to release top-notch models. In contrast, Citroën, which lacks the same family control, may soon discontinue the slow-selling C5 X.

Stellantis has a clear vision for its big cars and SUVs, focusing on two main brands: Peugeot and DS Automobiles. DS Automobiles is rumored to unveil an electro-futuristic ID/DS at Retromobile, with plans for production before 2030.

The Peugeot 408 offers three propulsion system choices, including a 1.2-liter turbo engine with power output options of 100 PS or 136 PS. The car also features a 48V mild hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator and a 22 kW motor. The E-408 electric version boasts a 210 PS motor and a 58.2 kWh battery with a range of up to 288 miles.

The Peugeot 408 is manufactured in France at the Mulhouse plant and in China. The car is built on the Efficient Modular Platform 2, originally developed by PSA Peugeot Citroën. While the 48V hybrid version was recently introduced, the E-408 is set to hit the UK market in early 2025.

The design of the Peugeot 408 is striking, with a high stance, large wheels, dramatic grille, and unique tailgate design. The interior offers ample space, with a generous boot capacity and comfortable seating for passengers. However, there are some minor issues like the lack of a wash-wipe system for the rear window and a long locking beep when the driver walks away.

The digital instrument cluster features small gauges, but the overall quality of materials used in the cabin is impressive. The Peugeot 408 offers a smooth and responsive driving experience, with agile handling and precise steering.

Overall, the Peugeot 408 is a standout model in the French car market, offering a blend of style, performance, and technology. With the addition of the E-408 electric version, the car is set to appeal to a wider audience and solidify its position as a top choice in the segment.
