Suzuki and Toyota Announce Collaboration for New Battery Electric SUV Model

Suzuki Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation have revealed plans for a groundbreaking partnership, with the goal of producing a battery electric vehicle (BEV) SUV model developed by Suzuki for Toyota. This new vehicle is slated to be manufactured at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India, with a planned release in spring 2025.

The history of collaboration between Suzuki and Toyota dates back to their shared origins in Enshu, where both companies transitioned from loom manufacturing to automobile production. Since 2016, when the chairmen of both companies began exploring potential partnerships, Suzuki and Toyota have worked together on various projects, from vehicle production to electrified vehicle promotion, expanding their reach to markets worldwide.

This latest announcement represents a significant milestone in their partnership, marking the first BEV produced under their original equipment manufacturer (OEM) relationship. With the global SUV market experiencing rapid growth, the introduction of this environmentally friendly option aims to meet consumer demand in a popular segment. Featuring a sleek design, advanced driving capabilities, and optional all-wheel drive, the new SUV promises a blend of performance and comfort.

The BEV unit and platform for this model have been collaboratively developed by Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd., combining their expertise to create a vehicle that meets modern drivers’ needs. Emphasizing their commitment to sustainable mobility, both companies are working towards a carbon-neutral future.

Partnerships like the one between Suzuki and Toyota are becoming increasingly common in the automotive industry, as companies seek to address technological advancements and market demands. Their alliance, which began in 2016, has evolved to include joint ventures and technology sharing, such as the development of hybrid variants of Suzuki models in collaboration with Toyota.

In 2021, the formation of the joint venture “Toyota Suzuki Motor Corporation” further solidified their commitment to electric vehicles and technological innovation. By pooling their resources and knowledge, Suzuki and Toyota are accelerating their transition towards electrification and paving the way for a sustainable future.
