Mercedes-AMG Confirms Development of Electric Super-SUV

Mercedes-AMG has officially announced that they are in the process of creating an electric super-SUV using their bespoke EV architecture, AMG.EA.

According to a report by Autocar back in April, this new model is being designed to compete with the likes of the Lotus Eletre, the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric, and the petrol-powered BMW XM.

Unlike the BMW XM which was developed by BMW’s M division, this new Mercedes SUV is being developed entirely by AMG, without being based on any existing model like the EQS SUV.

The anticipated release date for this electric super-SUV is in 2026, following the launch of the second-generation AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, which will be the first vehicle to utilize the AMG.EA platform.

Derived from Mercedes’ mainstream MB.EA platform, the AMG structure has been modified to incorporate advanced electric motors from Yasa, a company based in Oxfordshire.

These axial flux units are capable of producing up to 480bhp and 590lb ft of torque, all while weighing just 24kg.

The AMG.EA platform has the capability to support two motors on each axle, hinting at the possibility of future models generating well over 1000bhp.

Additionally, the structure will feature 800V electricals and a specialized AMG battery pack with a silicon anode.
