Is the Jaguar E-Pace a Reliable Family Wagon?

When it comes to reliability, a well-maintained and regularly serviced Jaguar E-Pace can indeed serve as a reliable family wagon. However, it is important to be aware of some common faults that are known to affect this model.

The UK boasts a strong network of Jaguar dealers and service centers, making it relatively easy to source parts and get your E-Pace fixed if any issues arise.

According to the What Car? reliability survey, the E-Pace ranked 29th out of 34 cars in the family SUV category, with an overall score of 83.8%. While it outperformed some rivals like the Range Rover Evoque and Skoda Karoq, other models such as the Nissan Qashqai and Volvo XC40 scored higher in terms of reliability.

Engine Concerns: It is recommended to test a used diesel Ingenium model from a cold start, as an engine rattle upon startup could indicate a worn timing chain. This issue can lead to engine failure, but Jaguar dealers can install an upgraded chain to rectify the problem. Additionally, blocked diesel particulate filters (DPF) and oil dilution are common issues to watch out for.

Gearbox Troubles: Some E-Pace models have experienced gearbox issues such as kicking out of gear or delays in gear engagement. Test driving a used car extensively can help identify any jerky gear changes.

Brake Concerns: Early models of the E-Pace had brake hoses that were prone to chafing on the wheel, leading to brake fluid leaks. While this issue should have been addressed, it’s important to check the service history of the vehicle.

Infotainment and Body: Keep an eye out for software glitches in later touchscreen displays and ensure that the tailgate opens and closes properly, as the struts are known to fail.

Owner Testimonial

Dan Walker: “During my almost four-year ownership of the E-Pace, I have found it to be a comfortable motorway cruiser with good handling on twisty roads. Despite some temperamental moments with the Pivi Pro infotainment system, I have not encountered any major maintenance issues. However, the higher road tax for the Chequered Flag special edition and expensive servicing costs are worth noting. Overall, I am satisfied with my E-Pace, having driven nearly 60,000 miles.”

Additional Information

The Jaguar E-Pace has received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, excelling in adult and child occupant safety categories. Various trims were available in the E-Pace range, with features such as 20-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and keyless entry offered in the top-tier HSE trim. R-Dynamic trims provide a sportier aesthetic for those seeking a more dynamic look.
