Ehang completes 1st ever flight test of eVTOL powered by solid-state batteries

Ehang, a Chinese electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) developer, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the first-ever flight test of a solid-state battery-powered eVTOL. This groundbreaking achievement paves the way for the use of next-generation batteries in smaller aircraft, marking a significant advancement in the field of aviation technology.

The Ehang EH216-S, powered by solid-state batteries, recently completed a single uninterrupted flight test with a duration of 48 minutes and 10 seconds. This test marks the world’s first autonomous manned eVTOL flight powered by solid-state batteries, showcasing the potential of this innovative technology in the aviation industry.

Solid-state batteries offer a range of advantages for different flight scenarios, including a substantial increase in endurance of 60-90 percent. These batteries, developed by Ehang-backed startup Inx Energy Technology, utilize lithium metal as the anode and oxide ceramic as the electrolyte, resulting in an impressive energy density of 480 Wh/kg. Compared to traditional liquid lithium batteries, solid-state batteries offer higher energy density, improved thermal stability, lower flammability, and a wider operating temperature range.

Ehang’s strategic partnership with Inx Energy has been instrumental in the development of high-energy solid-state batteries for eVTOL aircraft. The battery research institute of the Advanced Technology Application and Promotion Center has also collaborated with Inx Energy on solid-state battery research and development, leading to the successful manufacture of batteries suitable for the EH216-S.

Looking ahead, Ehang plans to further test and optimize the performance and stability of the EH216-S with Inx Energy, with the goal of achieving certification and mass production use of solid-state batteries in the EH216-S by the end of 2025. Inx Energy will continue to enhance the performance of the batteries to increase the range of the EH216-S, with a projected improvement of 25 percent to 60 minutes in 2025.

This milestone represents the first case of solid-state batteries being used in the eVTOL space, highlighting the transformative potential of next-generation battery technology in the aviation sector. With other companies also exploring the use of advanced battery technologies in electric aircraft, such as CATL’s upcoming eVTOL powered by their batteries, the future of electric aviation looks promising.
