New Mercedes CLA gets 1.5-litre petrol with diesel-level efficiency

Mercedes has exciting plans for the engine in their upcoming CLA model, hinting at the possibility of different power outputs in the future. While specific power figures have not been disclosed, powertrain lead engineer Karsten Krebs hinted at the potential for sportier versions down the line. The engine is currently undergoing homologation ahead of the CLA’s launch next year, with Mercedes aiming for impressive fuel efficiency similar to diesel engines with the hybrid powertrain.

The new engine is expected to deliver exceptional fuel economy, potentially rivaling the outgoing CLA’s 55mpg with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Testers have even managed to achieve over 60mpg during cruising, indicating the M252 could set a new benchmark for efficiency in its class. The 27bhp electric motor integrated into the powertrain can operate independently at speeds up to 62mph, drawing power from a compact 1.3kWh 48V battery located under the front passenger seat. Charging occurs through recuperation during deceleration, reaching up to 25kW.

One innovative feature of the engine is its ability to start seamlessly using the electric motor, eliminating the need for a traditional starter motor. This advanced start-stop function ensures a smooth driving experience for the driver. With Mercedes’ commitment to cutting-edge technology and efficiency, the M252 engine promises to deliver a blend of performance and eco-friendliness in the upcoming CLA model.
