Saldivar’s Trucking Leads the Way in Owner-Operator Transition to Electric Semi Trucks
Owner-operators play a significant role in the heavy truck market, but they have been hesitant to transition from diesel to electric semi trucks. However, a major shift may be on the horizon as Saldivar’s Trucking becomes the first independent owner-operator in the US to deploy a Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 truck.
One of the biggest obstacles for smaller fleets has been the higher upfront cost of electric semi trucks. To help overcome this challenge, there are various incentives available from governments, utilities, and non-profits. Smart dealers like TEC Equipment are crucial in educating their customers about these incentives and securing funding to make the transition to electric vehicles more accessible.
TEC Equipment worked closely with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to secure $410,000 in funding from CARB’s On-Road Heavy-Duty Voucher Incentive Program for Saldivar’s Trucking. This program aims to replace older, heavy-duty trucks with zero-emission vehicles and is specifically targeted towards small fleets with 10 vehicles or less operating in California.
Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, emphasized the importance of dealer partners like TEC Equipment in supporting owner-operators through the transition to battery-electric vehicles. Saldivar’s Volvo VNR Electric truck features a six-battery configuration with 565 kWh of storage capacity and a 250 kW charging capability, allowing for a range of up to 275 miles.
With Saldivar’s operational needs in mind, including night shifts at California ports covering 175-200 miles per night, the Volvo electric semi is well-equipped to meet the demands of owner-operators. As more owner-operators witness the success of Saldivar’s transition to electric trucks, the industry may see a broader shift towards sustainable transportation practices.
The collaboration between TEC Equipment, Saldivar’s Trucking, and Volvo Trucks highlights the importance of working together to address the unique challenges faced by small fleets in adopting electric vehicles. As the push towards electrification in the commercial trucking industry continues, partnerships like these will be essential in driving sustainable transportation forward.
Electrifying America’s commercial trucking fleet is crucial for the health of the environment, businesses, and communities. TEC Equipment’s dedication to advancing the cause and supporting their customers demonstrates the positive impact that expert partnerships can have in accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.
In conclusion, Saldivar’s Trucking’s pioneering move towards electric semi trucks sets a positive example for owner-operators in the industry. With the support of dealers like TEC Equipment and incentives from various sources, the transition to electric vehicles is becoming more feasible for fleets of all sizes.
