The Volvo XC90: A Closer Look at its Performance

The Volvo XC90 offers two powerful engine options for those looking for a blend of performance and efficiency. The B5 variant features a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine that delivers 247bhp and 267lb ft of torque. With a 0-62mph time of less than 8.0 seconds, the B5 is certainly no slouch.

Drivers will find that the B5 pulls strongly from various speeds, providing a smooth and responsive driving experience. While it may struggle to break traction in dry conditions, the overall performance is impressive. However, under hard acceleration, the engine can sound strained.

On the other hand, the T8 model combines a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a whopping 461bhp. This results in a quick 0-62mph time of under 5.5 seconds, offering a thrilling driving experience.

One of the standout features of the T8 is the seamless integration of the electric motor, providing a strong surge of power when needed. This translates to impressive overtaking ability, especially in the 30-70mph range. Despite some coarseness in sound, the T8 is quieter than the B5, thanks to the electric power assistance.

While the XC90’s eight-speed automatic gearbox is generally smooth and easy to use in everyday driving, it can feel sluggish when demanding more performance. Drivers may need to be firm with their demands to get a quicker response from the gearbox.

On the braking front, the XC90 excels, delivering strong and reliable stopping power in all situations. Whether it’s an emergency stop or routine braking, the XC90 inspires confidence with its precise braking performance.
