Great Wall Motor (GWM) Expands Presence in Brazil under Belt and Road Initiative

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is taking significant steps to solidify its position in Brazil as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Through close collaboration with local government bodies, supply chains, and other stakeholders, GWM is making strides in the Brazilian market.

GWM’s president of overseas business, Shi Qingke, recently met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss the development of the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry and future cooperation. President Lula expressed full support for GWM’s growth plans, while Mr. Shi announced that GWM’s Brazil plant is scheduled to commence production by mid-2025.

Prior to this meeting, Mr. Shi engaged in discussions with São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and Secretary of Economic Development Jorge Lima to outline factory operations and localization strategies. Governor Freitas assured his support for the plant and surrounding industries, underlining São Paulo’s strategic importance in advancing the NEV sector. Mr. Shi revealed plans to bolster the local supply chain and generate over 700 jobs in the region.

Since entering the Brazilian market in 2022, GWM has expanded its dealer network to 88 outlets, spanning key cities and regions. The company has committed to investing over 10 billion BRL (approximately 11.5 billion RMB) over the next decade to deepen local industry connections, particularly in the electrification and intelligent sectors, and strengthen its position in the Brazilian NEV market.

GWM is also enhancing its Iracemápolis plant to become Brazil’s first NEV-focused complete vehicle factory. Once completed, the smart, digitized facility will produce high-quality NEVs tailored to the local market. Additionally, GWM intends to introduce more than 10 NEV models in Brazil under its Haval, Tank, and Ora brands, further diversifying its product offerings.
