GM recalls 132,037 pickups due to faulty power tailgates

General Motors has announced a recall of 132,037 Chevrolet and GMC heavy-duty pickup trucks due to a potential issue with their tailgates. The recall specifically affects models with power-unlatching tailgates, which feature an electronic gate-release switch that may short circuit from water intrusion. This could cause the tailgate to unexpectedly open while the truck is in Park, posing a risk of cargo falling out of the bed if not properly secured.

The models included in the recall are the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD, as well as the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD. General Motors has stated that they are not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this defect, estimating that only 1% of the affected vehicles are at risk. It is worth noting that GM recently recalled earlier versions of these trucks for transmission issues.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors has received 237 complaints of tailgates unlatching “while driving.” However, GM clarified that the incidents likely occurred while the vehicles were in Park and the tailgates opened later. The automaker assured that software logic prevents the release of the tailgate latch while the trucks are in Drive or Reverse.

To address the issue, GM will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies for the affected tailgates free of charge. The replacement parts will feature a new material that provides better resistance to water intrusion. Additionally, GM will reimburse owners who may have already paid for related repairs. Until the recall work is completed, GM is advising owners to ensure that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.

Owner notification letters for the recall are set to be mailed out by January 13, 2025. Owners can also contact Chevy customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 for more information. Alternatively, they can visit GM’s recall page online. The reference number for this recall is N242469160.

Overall, General Motors is taking proactive steps to address this safety concern and ensure the well-being of their customers. By promptly addressing the issue and providing necessary repairs, GM is demonstrating their commitment to vehicle safety and customer satisfaction.
