Xiaomi EV, the car-making unit of Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY), is gearing up to expand its operations overseas as competition in the domestic market intensifies. According to a report by local media outlet 36kr, Xiaomi EV is in the process of assembling a team to facilitate the sale of cars in international markets.

The company is taking steps to launch its business in overseas regions and plans to kick off car sales operations in several locations. To support this initiative, Xiaomi Group has established an overseas sales business preparation group within its international division. The team is currently recruiting professionals for various roles, including market research, project management, and EV after-sales engineers.

In addition, Xiaomi EV’s smart driving division is also ramping up its efforts for overseas markets. The division is hiring new positions to navigate the compliance process for smart driving features abroad and prepare for their introduction in international markets.

Once the team is fully assembled, Xiaomi EV intends to conduct small-volume car sales in select overseas regions in the coming years. This approach will allow the company to gauge market response and lay the groundwork for a larger-scale rollout of its international operations.

Xiaomi EV plans to leverage Xiaomi’s existing network of over 100 directly-managed stores overseas for its sales efforts. The company’s first model, the SU7 electric sedan, was launched in China earlier this year and has already surpassed its delivery target for 2024.

Looking ahead, Xiaomi has set a new target of 130,000 units for the SU7 in 2024 and is gearing up to introduce its second EV model, the YU7 SUV, in the market next year. Xiaomi has been making strides in showcasing its vehicles on the international stage, with appearances at events such as the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and a special display in Paris.

Despite its progress in overseas markets, Xiaomi faces challenges in building recognition in the high-end segment. However, the company’s familiarity with international markets and experience in overseas operations are expected to help Xiaomi EV gain traction in local markets.

As Xiaomi EV accelerates its efforts to expand overseas, it is poised to make significant strides in the global electric vehicle market. Stay tuned for more updates on Xiaomi’s foray into international car sales.
