When it comes to iconic sports cars, few can match the timeless appeal of the AC Cobra. Originally introduced in the 1960s, the Cobra has retained a cult following among automotive enthusiasts for its combination of raw power and classic design. Now, a new iteration of this legendary vehicle has been unveiled in the form of the AC Cobra MkII.
The body of the MkII stays true to the original model, with the only difference being the use of composite materials instead of aluminum. To many, including myself, the MkII represents the ideal balance of the Cobra lineage, resembling more closely the AC Ace on which it was based rather than the more exaggerated MkIII.
Retaining the 3-inch tubular-steel ladder-frame chassis and 15-inch wire wheels, the MkII exudes a sense of authenticity and heritage. Despite its classic looks, the thought of driving a 330bhp-per-tonne beast with leaf-spring suspension on wet roads is enough to keep any driver on their toes.
Our journey begins at Brooklands, a fitting starting point given AC’s historical ties to the area. From the 1980s onwards, AC’s factory was located along a section of the old Finishing Straight, where the Cobra MkIV was produced under Brian Angliss’s Autokraft company. While Angliss also attempted a modern reinterpretation of the Ace, financial difficulties led to the company’s demise after a limited production run.
Brooklands holds a special place in AC’s history, dating back to 1922 when an AC car set a speed record on the banked circuit. Today, we navigate the streets of London in the MkII, enjoying the open-air experience with a tonneau cover ready for the return of the rain.
Inside the cabin, you’re greeted by a classic layout featuring leather-trimmed bucket seats, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a dashboard adorned with push/pull buttons and flick switches. The vintage charm of the interior is complemented by modern amenities, making for a comfortable and engaging driving experience.
As we continue our journey, the AC Cobra MkII proves to be a testament to the enduring legacy of this legendary sports car. With its timeless design and exhilarating performance, the MkII pays homage to the past while embracing the future of automotive innovation.
