BMW’s Approach to Electric Vehicle Dynamics

In a recent interview, BMW’s head of the M division, Frank van Meel, discussed the intricacies of controlling electric motors in high-performance vehicles. Van Meel emphasized the importance of using a single ‘hand’ to control all aspects of the vehicle, including acceleration, cornering, braking, and stabilizing. He believes that this approach creates a new dimension of vehicle dynamics and helps counteract the increase in weight typically associated with electric vehicles.

This strategy aligns with Alpine CEO Philippe Krief’s perspective on torque vectoring between multiple electric motors. Krief believes that this technology can create a sensation of “perceived lightness” that masks the true weight of an EV. The collaboration between BMW and Alpine reflects a shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle performance.

BMW’s M division is dedicated to developing bespoke components for its electric drivetrains, drawing inspiration from the parent company’s technology. Just as M has historically modified standard BMW engines for higher performance, the division plans to adapt existing components for electric systems. Van Meel highlighted the close cooperation between M and BMW AG in utilizing base engines as the foundation for their high-performance creations.

A recent spy shot of a camouflaged BMW prototype hinted at a futuristic electric sports car from the M division. While the prototype featured motors at each corner, van Meel dismissed the idea of this specific design reaching production due to cooling limitations for high-output powertrains. The prototype is likely to serve as a showcase for BMW’s upcoming EV lineup, starting with replacements for popular models like the X3 and 3 Series.

Although the exact source of the motors in the prototype remains unknown, British company Protean Electric has demonstrated the benefits of wheel-mounted motors in reducing mass and cost. By eliminating traditional components like axles and driveshafts, this technology allows for more compact battery placement and a lower vehicle height. This innovative approach aligns with BMW’s vision for the future of electric mobility.

As BMW continues to explore new avenues for electric vehicle performance, the collaboration between the M division and industry partners like Alpine and Protean Electric promises exciting developments in the world of high-performance EVs. Stay tuned for more updates on BMW’s electrification journey and the cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of automotive engineering.
