BYD has recently established an advanced technology research and development center dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) and large models, with a focus on vehicle intelligence. The center, which currently employs about 500 people, was formed at the end of September and is expected to expand to over 1,000 employees in the future.
This new division, part of BYD’s automotive new technology research institute, includes an AI lab, AI supercomputing development department, and a big data platform department. The center will concentrate on AI algorithms, AI infrastructure, and large models to support smart driving, smart cockpit, and Dual Mode businesses.
The establishment of the R&D center is in line with BYD’s increased focus on software and algorithms this year. In January, the company introduced the Xuanji Architecture as the core of its vehicle intelligence strategy. This architecture encompasses various components such as cloud-based AI, vehicle-based AI, 5G network, and control chain, among others.
With an investment of RMB 100 billion ($13.7 billion) earmarked for intelligence development, BYD aims to lead the way in the NEV market. The company plans to integrate smart driving features into all its models next year, leveraging these capabilities to drive sales growth.
In 2023, BYD emerged as the world’s top seller of NEVs, selling over 3 million units. The company is on track to achieve annual sales of 4.25 million vehicles in 2024, with November sales reaching 506,804 units and cumulative sales for the year totaling 3,837,632 units.
As part of its strategy to enhance vehicle intelligence, BYD is reportedly developing its own smart driving chip. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to advancing AI technology and positioning itself as a leader in the evolving NEV industry.
In conclusion, BYD’s establishment of the advanced technology research and development center underscores its dedication to innovation and investment in AI and large models. With a strong focus on vehicle intelligence and smart driving features, BYD is poised to maintain its position as a key player in the NEV market.
