The demand for roadsters may be small, but it certainly hasn’t vanished. BMW has found success in their joint venture with Toyota to develop the third generation Z4. This model has outsold the Supra almost tenfold in Europe, proving its popularity in the market.
The G29 series Z4 was revealed in 2018 and has been available since the following year. It has managed to outshine its rivals, including the Audi TT, and has undergone a mid-life facelift and certain model year tweaks. Key markets for the Z4 include Germany, the US, China, Japan, and the UK.
One of the latest updates to the Z4 is the availability of a manual transmission for the 2,998 cc inline six-cylinder engine. Previously, only the less powerful four-cylinder options were available with a manual gearbox. The new gearbox has been engineered with “M-specific components” to enhance the shifting experience for customers who prefer a manual transmission. The ZF eight-speed torque converter remains an option as well.
The 3.0-liter turbo engine in the Z4 remains unchanged in terms of power and torque, delivering 250 kW (340 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) respectively. The engine features mild hybrid technology and offers impressive fuel efficiency of over 30 mpg.
The Z4 Handschalter comes with unique 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, retuned suspension, and other design enhancements like glossy ‘Shadowline’ trim, aerodynamic flaps, red brake calipers, and a new color called Frozen Deep green metallic.
Inside, the Z4 Handschalter features a unique sleeve on the center console, cognac-colored Vernasca leather trim with black piping, and high-gloss plastic trim pieces. The driving experience of the Z4 is enhanced by the powerful engine, precise handling, and rear-wheel drive dynamics.
The availability of a manual transmission in the Z4 Handschalter is a rare offering in the sports car segment, as manual transmissions are becoming increasingly rare. The Z4 competes with the Porsche Boxster, which also offers a six-speed manual option. Both cars have their unique appeal and cater to different types of buyers.
As for the future of the Z4, there is speculation about the production timeline at the Graz plant in Austria. BMW has not commented on any plans for a successor to the Z4. The Z4 M40i Handschalter is priced from GBP 63,230 and offers impressive performance figures, making it a top choice for enthusiasts looking for a manual transmission sports car.
