Driving Home For Christmas: A Time-Honored Tradition

As the holiday season approaches, many of us find ourselves embarking on long journeys to reunite with loved ones. For some, this journey is accompanied by the familiar sounds of Christmas music, setting the mood for the festivities ahead. One such tradition that has stood the test of time is the ceremonial playing of Chris Rea’s “Driving Home For Christmas.”

For many, myself included, this tradition dates back to my university days, when I would make the annual trek from Keele to the West Country. The monotonous drive through traffic-congested roads was made more bearable with a CD of Christmas tunes. However, as someone with eclectic musical tastes, the repetitive nature of mainstream holiday songs left much to be desired.

Enter Chris Rea’s iconic tune, “Driving Home For Christmas.” The opening piano notes signaled the start of a journey that would culminate in the picturesque town of Clevedon, my hometown. The timing was impeccable, with the instrumental bridge coinciding perfectly with the breathtaking view from Wynhol viaduct. It was a magical moment that never failed to evoke a sense of nostalgia and anticipation.

While the original CD has been replaced by streaming services like Spotify, the tradition lives on. The sentimental lyrics of Rea’s song, with its references to tailbacks and traffic jams, strike a chord with anyone who has experienced the chaos of holiday travel. It’s a reminder that the journey home, however stressful, is a cherished part of the Christmas experience.

The origins of “Driving Home For Christmas” add another layer of meaning to the song. Written by Rea in the 1970s, it was inspired by his own journey back to Middlesbrough for the holidays. Stranded in London due to budget constraints, Rea’s wife came to the rescue in a humble Rover Metro. Little did he know that this simple act of kindness would inspire a timeless Christmas classic.

As we navigate the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, let us not forget the joy of coming together with family and friends. Whether you’re driving home for Christmas or simply enjoying the festive spirit from the comfort of your home, let Chris Rea’s melodic ode serve as a reminder of the true meaning of the season. And who knows, you might just find yourself singing along to those jingling bells with newfound appreciation.
